HEALTH ALERT (Human Enterovirus 68 –September 7, 2014)
Human Enterovirus 68 is considered rare but is currently in 10 states and spreading.
The ten states are: Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Iowa, Colorado, Ohio, Oklahoma, North Carolina, and Georgia
Human Enterovirus 68 Symptoms are:
**Wheezing (key symptom)
May affect any child but those children with asthma are prone to this respiratory disease. Be sure that children are taking their inhalers for signs and symptoms of asthma. Wheezing is the key symptom with this respiratory illness. If your child is having trouble breathing, color changes in skin, or not responding, take them to the nearest ER quickly.
Break the chain of the disease:
Hand washing with soap/water and hand gels.
Cover mouth when sneezing and coughing.
Avoid contact with others who are sick.
Carry and use emergency inhalers if prescribed. See your provider if you are using emergency inhalers several times a day.
