Should you take Vitamin D3 to help decrease your changes for getting the flu or influenza? Yes. How does Vitamin D3 work? Vitamin D3 helps with the immunity of the body, thus helping to build up immunity to prevent viruses, such as, influenza from inhibiting the body and making one sick.
Evidence-based research showed in 2008-2009, a randomized trial of vitamin D3 supplementation, did prevent influenza A in schoolchildren. Another trail in 2009 targeting the flu virus H1N1 in a randomized controlled trail done with vitamin D3 supplement, again showed decreased changes for getting the flu. More testing resulted in showed low Vitamin D3 levels could not prevent flu or any upper respiratory illnesses.
The trails used Vitamin D3 doses of 1000 IU daily. Currently, in the United States this is considered a daily maintenance dose for Vitamin D3.
