Health questions to ask at the family reunion
Many do not know the health background in the family. Sometimes we assume that everyone has heard about Auntie’s illness because she never stops talking about it. Not always true. At the family reunion is a good time to ask. Find out what you may need to be screening for and tell your health care provider so correct screening and testing is done to keep you healthy.
Going by body systems is helpful. Here is an abbreviated list.
1. Eyes, Ears, Nose, Mouth
2. Throat, Thyroid, Neck
5. Back, Spine
6. Liver, Gallbladder
7. Stomach, Intestines
8. Bladder, Kidneys
9. Sex organs (Uterus, Ovaries, Prostrate)
10. Bones, Skin
Then what type of treatments and who had them in the family?
Where did the family go for treatments?
Is there any DNA samples taken from the family for genetics or ancestry results.
Does everyone have a Living Will, Power of Attorney, Wills, and understand palliative care and hospice?
Anyone have any extra health care supplies (walkers, wheelchairs, etc.) they can donate within the family to help keep cost down?
Any information on adoption that needs to be addressed? Where to get birth certificate?
Where are birth certificates and death certificates of elders located? This may be necessary if you wish to apply for a Certificate of Indian Blood, and other legal documents.
