How long is a workout?
This is an interesting question that many beginners do not know or understand. Not knowing how long to work out or how long the workout takes can cause one to fail in keeping a regular workout routine.
What should a typical workout time frame be?
Many exercise specialist recommend a warm up and a cool down to the workout to prevent injuries. This may be between 5 to 15 minutes before and after. This is already 10 to 30 minutes total for your workout. This would then be followed by the workout.
The middle part of the workout. The workout may consist of weights, exercises, or machine workouts. Each machine will need time to clean, adjust weights/program, workout, and then clean before moving to another. The time to prep can be a couple minutes and often is not counted into the workout time but can certainly cause a clock watcher to be late if they are only thinking of the time for working out.
Walking a 3 MPH mile will take 20 minutes. Two miles would be 40 minutes. Now add in your pre/post/cleaning and you are easily over an hour at the gym or into your workout.
How can you cut the workout time? As the new beginner improves with reps, machines, and routine, they will see the time shorten. After a while a mile that took 20 minutes is now an easy 15 minutes. Setting up machines and prep will become quicker and shorten as familiarity will help the overall time shorten.
Another way to shorten the workout and recommended for muscle rest, is to work on arms one day and legs the next day. This changes up the routine and keeps it from becoming boring over time.
So understanding that the exercising routine will take longer in the beginning and shorten as you improve will help manage the time at the gym.
