Anxiety of Reunions
It is that time of year again. Reunion time. Class reunions, High School reunions, University reunions, and more reunions for everything else you have ever done in your life. First up, will you attend or not? That is the big decision because it often has to deal with did you enjoy that time and did it benefit you in a way you want to represent at the reunion with it. Sometimes it takes a leap of faith to just attend. Go for it. You can always leave early.
Once you decide to go, then you will follow a series of communications of where to attend, what to bring, and figuring out what you will wear. Some reunions, such as family, will have the family reunion tee. That helps narrow it down a bit for you. While University reunions might be white/black tie events and require a bit more planning.
All reunions do result in anxiety of the unknown. Mostly stemming from self-esteem in relationship, to your accomplishments, to how you want to relate the information. Many, will venture off into the world to live their dreams and lives, thus this will be greatly different than those that did not. Will we all get along?
Dealing with the anxiety? Keep it simple. Smile. Introduce yourself. Not everyone looks like their yearbook picture anymore. Prepare some general statements. A little bit about your family, your work, and accomplishments since you last met up. Not necessary to go in great details, as it is hard to meet and greet several hundreds of reunion alumni in a few hours.
Those that you do strike a chord with and want to engage more into a deeper conversation, agree to meet up later to talk. It is possible to rekindle networks and contacts you do want to keep more up to date with than those reunion times.
Just remember, everyone is in the same boat. It has been awhile since everyone got together. It is natural to be a little nervous but odds are you will have a good time.
