Why do I need dye?
Many times the area that the provider wants to see imaged, needs to be highlighted in the body. This can be done with dye. The dye had chemicals in it that will let the imaging machine reflect or highlight the dye. This then allows the machines to take better pictures of the insides or body parts that may not be functioning properly.
Dye is often used in the heart to show where the blood is flowing or not. This helps the provider to target in on what area needs attention. Dye can also show other finer parts of the body, such as in the spine, and if those areas are working properly or not.
Not everyone does will with dye and should you begin itching or feeling “funny” please let your provider or staff nearby know. If you have already experienced an allergic reaction to dye, please let the staff know this. New products are coming on the market all the time and there may be an alternative chemical or imaging that will get the same results for your provider. There is also a possibility that the reaction was not life threatening and pre-medication will help prevent the effects of dye. All this should be discussed with your provider and their staff.
Be sure to follow any discharge instructions as some dyes need post attention as they leave the body. Be sure to notify your provider of any concerns should you have any.
