Why New Patients Need to Come in Early.
Often a new patient will be scheduled early or at a designated time. This is so that when the patient arrives, the patient will fill out paperwork that will begin their chart/file for the provider to review and refer back to when needed.
The paperwork will include mandatory information such as office information, HIPAA, and do’s/don’ts for the office that may depend on the type of care the patient is seeking. Such as do not eat before testing so many hours in advance or what to do if you need to reschedule.
The paperwork will also include history of your medical background. Do you smoke? Did you smoke? Do you take medications? What type? Do you exercise? How often? The list will be lengthy and the more information you can fill out the better the provider can quickly address your problems. There will be less to “rule out” if the provider already knows you had this or that done prior to visiting at their office. It also allows the provider to pull records from other providers to their office to keep your chart complete. Any prior MRI, X-ray, scans, and so forth can be added in your chart.
If you do not have a lot of background information because you have been healthy or have lacked access to a provider, do not be discouraged, and just let your provider know when filling out your paperwork.
Do come prepared to give samples, get basic test done, and wear clothing that you can remove if necessary. Winter is a time when folks bundle up, it is hard to get a blood pressure when wearing thermal underclothes under shirts.
Do allow for extra time in your day for first visits, as your visit will take longer than a review visit as the office prepares your chart, takes samples, records vital signs, and then you see the provider for your first health care assessment.
