There is a reason that you take medications at a particular time of day. Some medications have adverse reactions that cause sleeping or nausea. Those medications may need to be taken at bedtime and with food.
Another concern with medications is how long does the medication take in the system?
Medications that are indigestion or swallowed by the mouth will travel down the GI track to the stomach. Medications will begin dissolving from the gastric secretions in the GI. This is why medications need a full glass of water to help the medication make it to the stomach to dissolve. Medications don't think they do. They are designed that after so long and a chemical amount of gastric contents they will begin dissolving. Dissolving before reaching the stomach can cause irritation to the GI track and result in other problems.
Once medications reach the stomach, the gastric acids begin working on the medication. Typically this takes about twenty minutes but can vary on person, gastric contents, and type of medication.
The half life begins. This is how long the medication will last in the human system before being complete dissolved until the medication is rendered not effective or diluted to where it is not helping any longer.
Half-life’s can be short or long. This means that medications that need to be taken more often with shorter half-life’s or taken in smaller amounts to get the desired effect.
Reaching a therapeutic level of medication is reaching and mainlining the half-life of the medication. A medication lasting 12 hours should be taken every twelve hours or twice a day. If the therapeutic level is not maintained then the medication will not be effective. This can result in many problems from not helping to causing a sharp drop in therapeutic level that causes adverse and unwanted results.
