Scientist recently discovered the awake and sleep brain neurons off/on switch. High sodium chemical turns on the awake cells. High potassium turns off the cells, thus causing sleep.
Currently tested in mice, but it has been noted that night shift workers eating habits using vending machines at night, show that salty foods are preferred over sugary snacks. Hypothesized that the salty foods help keep the night shift workers awake when the norm was to fall asleep.
Muscle cramps or "Charlie Horses" in the legs at night are from the lack of potassium and magnesium, keeping the individual awake. Increase in medications with high levels of potassium/magnesium, such as medications for restless leg syndrome and so forth, show that the active ingredient will help calm the legs. High potassium leads to turning off the cells to induce sleep. The correlation is noted that medications for restless legs may help induce sleep. The hypothesis is potassium turns off the trigger and causes sleep.
