Lisa what is a living will?
A living will speaks for you when you can not. Do you want CPR? Do you want to be on a machine? Do you want a feeding tube? Do you want hospice or palliative care?
These are all things that are addressed in a living will or advanced directive papers. A living will is all about you and your health. It does not include any property, money, or belongs. A living will gives you the choice to say if you want your heart started or not (CPR). Do you want to be on a machine (ventilator that breaths for you and includes a tube in your mouth or permanent tube in your throat). A tube feeding in your nose stomach or intestinal track (NGT, GT, JT) that provides liquid food with minerals and vitamins. Do you want pain medication and to be kept comfortable? One-on-one care when you are actively passing away? Perhaps have a chaplain at your bedside for your family? This is palliative and hospice care. All things that can be put into a living will.
A living will then needs to be signed by two unrelated people or stamped by a notary. Then the living will can be given to your provider to be put in your chart and given to the local hospital, should they take them for charts, and will be ready for you, heaven forbid, something would happen.
It is good to have all your important papers in a packet ready to go in case of emergencies. Easy to grab and go.
